  • The Trail Runner's Guide to Never Getting a Blister Again

    TRAILMEND Team

Most blisters are decided before you ever start moving. Here's the checklist worth running through before every long effort.

    1. Socks over shoes

Fit matters more, but sock choice decides how much friction your skin actually feels. Go with wool or synthetic blends that wick moisture — cotton holds sweat against your skin and turns a minor hot spot into a real problem by mile 10.

    2. Break in your shoes before race day

New shoes on race day is one of the most common (and most avoidable) blister triggers. Give any pair at least 20-30 trail miles before you trust it for a long effort.

    3. Lace for your foot, not the box instructions

A loose heel means your foot slides with every step — and every slide is friction. If you're getting heel blisters, a simple heel-lock lacing technique solves most of it.

    4. Apply prevention before you feel anything

By the time you feel a hot spot, damage has already started. Apply an anti-friction balm to toes, heels, and known pressure points before you lace up — not after something starts to hurt.

    5. Pack for the moment things go wrong anyway

Even with all of the above, long enough efforts in wet conditions can still cause hot spots. Carry a travel-size balm stick in your vest so you can treat a hot spot the moment you feel it, before it becomes a blister that ends your day.

None of this is complicated. It just has to happen before the damage, not after.
